Whats so great about Olive Oil?

There is a growing body of research that reinforces something the Mediterranean way of eating has known for centuries — quality matters. This is not just a trend, it nurtures a healthy lifestyle.

A recent study highlighted by NDTV explores how extra virgin olive oil may play a role in protecting the brain from age-related cognitive decline. What is particularly interesting is how it works.

The research points to the gut–brain connection — where compounds in extra virgin olive oil support a healthier gut microbiome, which in turn influences memory and cognitive function over time.

It also reinforces a critical distinction often overlooked:

not all olive oils are created equal.

Extra virgin olive oil, being minimally processed, retains its natural antioxidants and polyphenols — compounds that are largely diminished in refined oils.

For those of us working in food, this is a reminder that:

• Ingredient quality is not just about taste. Though honestly, EVOO is a delicious choice.

• Processing methods matter. EVOO is cold pressed and quality of olives and the provenance they come from matters most.

• And increasingly, consumers are connecting food choices with long-term wellbeing and YES you can easily incorporate EVOO in Indian dishes. Just pour over on your salads to begin with. Small steps matter.

At Ybarra, this philosophy has been at the core of what we do for over 175 years — selection, precision, and respect for the ingredient.

Worth a read for anyone interested in where food, science, and everyday choices intersect.
